Central Wyoming Jade Country

Wyoming named nephrite jade its state gemstone on the strength of the boulders that weather out of the Granite Mountains between Lander, Jeffrey City, and Rawlins. Public BLM ground here is open to hand collecting, but the district is dense with jade claims and interlocking private and state sections, so pull a current surface-management map and check the BLM claim records before you swing a hammer. Most of what remains on the surface is black or olive - translucent apple-green is a lifetime find.
