This is the guided, private-claim alternative to hunting the open BLM ground at Topaz Mountain: the operators blast and machine-excavate their own sites in the Thomas Range so visitors work freshly exposed rhyolite instead of picked-over float. Sites include Topaz Dome, a second topaz location and a bixbyite and pink topaz claim, and the operators say you keep everything you find, museum-quality specimens included. Book ahead; this is a scheduled tour, not a drive-up.
| What you can find | topaz, pink topaz, bixbyite, red beryl, pseudobrookite |
|---|---|
| Access | Fee dig — Fee |
| Fees | Public tours, private tours for one to eight people, and prospector passes for collecting the rubble piles at Topaz Dome. Prices are not posted on the operator's site and vary by product, so request current rates before booking. Expect guided-tour pricing rather than a walk-in day fee. |
| Season & hours | Scheduled year-round. Daytime tours generally run 9 am to 5 pm daily and evening or night tours roughly 5 pm to 10 pm. Private tours should be booked at least two weeks in advance, though the operators will check earlier availability on request. Weather in the Thomas Range can cancel a date. |
| Kids | Family-friendly — Youth under age 13 must be supervised and working with an adult. The advantage over the free BLM ground is that blasted, freshly opened rock does most of the hard work for you, which keeps young diggers finding things. |
