BLM set this piece of the Rabbit Basin aside so anyone could dig Oregon's state gem for free, and BLM's own Oregon/Washington rock collecting guide lists the Lakeview District sunstone area as ground specifically set aside for collecting. Sunstone here is a labradorite feldspar that runs from water-clear through champagne to the prized red and green, often with copper platelets that flash when you tilt the stone. Watch the boundary markers closely — BLM warns that collecting from a private claim without permission may bring legal penalties, and claims surround the public ground. Dispersed camping is allowed anywhere in the collection area.
